JV HOCKEY BOOSTERS UPDATE

January 26, 2005

Current record is 12 wins, 7 losses, and 1 tie, which include scrimmages and tournament play.

The team has been playing very well.  Out of those 7 losses, 5 were to St. Ed’s.  Out of those 7 losses, only 2 games had a larger than 1 goal differential.

All season we’ve had a hard time trying to beat St. Ed’s.  We are primarily an “all Freshmen” team with a few Sophomores.  Although we have played them tough, it has been difficult to beat the JV St. Ed’s team.  The JV St. Ed’s team is made up of many Juniors and Sophomores with just a few Freshman. They are a great team that could beat many varsity teams.

In Tournament play, we have done well but again have had a hard time getting past St. Ed’s.  We came in 3rd place in the Thanksgiving Tournament and 2nd place in the Christmas Tournament.

We still have one player out with a knee injury and we are looking forward to his return as we enter our last weeks of the season.  Only time will tell.

The Trainers have done a wonderful job helping with the typical bumps and bruises that come with the sport.  They have also done their best to keep the players healthy by keeping the water bottles clean and sterile so the players don’t pass cold and flu germs amongst themselves.

The coaching staff has also done a great job with the players.  They have worked them hard at the same time making it fun.  The kids have bonded well over the season.  A good sign is I have only heard a few grumbles about the 6:00 a.m. practices from the players.  This shows that they look forward to playing together and being on the ice!

VARSITY HOCKEY BOOSTERS UPDATE

January 26, 2005

Current Overall Record:  17-9

Red North Division Record:  4-4

Since our last Booster’s Meeting, we hosted the Padua Holiday Tournament at Iceland.  We beat Findley, 2 to 1; Thomas Worthington, 7-1; Toledo St. John, 4-1; and St. Ed’s in the Championship Game, 4-1.

The Padua Varsity squad also won the St. Ed’s Eagle Classic Tournament.  We beat St. St. Ed’s again in the championship game, 4-3.

After winning both of the tournaments, we started off the 2005 calendar year with a disappointing loss to Lake Catholic.  With a few players fighting colds and flu, we lost the game, 2-3, with 21 seconds left in sudden death overtime.  We then moved on to play St. Ed’s, yes, again, and won yet again (our third consecutive win).  Score, 2-0.  Shaker Heights was next with home ice advantage.  A very exciting game brought another win to Padua, 2-1.  Last weekend, we beat St. Ed’s, yet again, and hopefully won’t see them in the Baron Cup.  Last Sunday, we could not old on to beat Shaker Heights, a win we really needed to help in our quest for a spot in the Baron Cup.

Currently, in the Red North Division, there is a 3-way tie for 3rd place; Padua, St. Ed’s and Lake Catholic.

This weekend we take on University School at Iceland, in Strongsville, at 7:10 p.m., on Friday night.  Sunday, we face St. Ignatius in our last regular season game at Brooklyn, at 4:15 p.m.  We hope to win both games and seal our spot in the Baron Cup.

Please show your support for Bruin Hockey.  Keep cabin fever at bay this weekend, and come out and support the Bruin Hockey Team.

BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL

BOOSTERS UPDATE -

JANUARY 26, 2005

The Padua boys’ varsity basketball team hopes to regroup and finish the season strong after a disappointing 4 – 8 record to start the season.  The boys are 3 – 3 in the NCL, with victories over Lake Catholic, Trinity and Elyria Catholic, and losses against VASJ, Chanel and Holy Name.  The Holy Name game, a double overtime 71 – 68 loss at home, was especially disappointing since there were chances to win in regulation and in the first overtime.  After stalling for the last shot in both periods, the boys were unable to get off decent attempts to win.  Close losses continue to haunt the team.

The boys are tied with Lake Catholic, Holy Name and NDCL for third place in the NCL, behind VASJ and Chanel.  The remaining eight games on the schedule are all NCL games, so they still have a chance to move up in the standings.  Four home games remain against: Trinity on February 1; Chanel on February 4; VASJ on February 8; and a make-up game against NDCL which is yet to be scheduled.

The last regular season game will be February 18 at Holy Name.

Sectional tournament games begin the week of February 21st.
